Need more cooperation and less competition

Bangladeshi people like to be their own boss and operate their business them selves, which results in many small shops in a commercial area competing with each other. The problem is more concrete walls and repeat of basic administrative tasks which is not efficient. The government doesn't get much tax because all the businesses are too small to be taxable.

We need to work cooperatively in a team which will enable us to specialize in a field and make collective decisions. In any proper economy there are large shopping malls which employs lots of people who specialize in their field and advance their skills at the same time pay sizable taxes. These shopping malls also offer entertainment, socializing and a variety of goods & services at competitive prices which is unthinkable for the majority of the people in poor countries like Bangladesh. There should be more competition among businesses and more cooperation among consumers and employees.

One area that needs most cooperation is cleaning up the country.

Why Britain is a world leader in offshore wind

Its wind farms are key to the country’s net-zero hopes

Nov 24th 2022

One turn of an “sg 8.0-167 dd” turbine generates enough electricity to run a British home for a day and a night. sg stands for Siemens Gamesa, a subsidiary of the German industrial giant, which makes the machines in Hull. The 8.0 is the turbine’s maximum output in megawatts (mw). The 167 is the diameter of its rotor in metres: it sweeps out in a circle equivalent in area to about three football pitches. And the dd stands for direct drive, an electricity-generation technology with no fiddly gears to wear out. At Hornsea 2, a wind farm located off the Yorkshire coast, 165 of these vast turbines form a field of steel stretching farther than the eye can see. Hornsea 2, which became fully functional in August, is now the largest wind farm in the world. When the wind really blows it can power 1.4m homes.

The development of its offshore wind industry is one of Britain’s biggest infrastructural successes. The first farms, installed in the early 2000s, amounted to little more than a cottage industry, repurposing tiny onshore turbines for the sea, with outputs of just two megawatts. Since then, the sector has boomed. By 2010 there were 1.3 gigawatts (gw) of wind power in British waters. Today there are 14gw. Until 2021, when it was overtaken by China (see chart), Britain had installed more offshore wind capacity than any other country in the world. About 36% of British electricity now comes from wind, the majority of it offshore. Duncan Clark, the boss of the British arm of Orsted, which developed Hornsea 2, says offshore wind could be producing half of Britain’s electricity by 2030. “What has happened is quite beyond almost everyone’s expectations,” he says. In the process, the cost has fallen sharply. In 2015 new offshore wind cost £120 ($155) per megawatt hour; today it costs well below £40.

Britain’s success in wind-farming is partly down to government policy. Contracts for building and running wind farms come with strict progress deadlines (and the risk, if they are not met, of cancellation). The contracts are offered through a competitive auction process which has helped drive down prices. Geography also plays a big part. Britain’s coastline runs along the western shore of the North Sea, one of the windiest places on earth. It is relatively shallow, which makes constructing wind farms easier. All this has attracted myriad companies, supplying services and equipment, that developers can call upon to help build farms in British waters. “It’s one of the best places in the world to build offshore wind,” says Soeren Lassen, head of offshore-wind research at Wood Mackenzie, a consultancy.

It has not all been plain sailing. The government’s ambition to bring as much of the industry as possible on to British soil has had mixed success. A turbine factory that General Electric was planning to build in Teesside fell through, “due to a lack of volume”, the firm says. Industry insiders said the developer it was supplying failed to secure enough contracts. It now ships turbines into British wind farms from France. No companies that make and install monopiles—the vast piles of steel rebar and concrete that fix the tower of the turbine to the floor of the sea—are yet operational in Britain, though a South Korean outfit, seah, has just started building a £400m factory in Teesside. Orsted has signed a contract with the firm to build its next wind farm, Hornsea 3. It will produce twice as much electricity as Hornsea 2.

More growth lies ahead. Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, has promised to build 50gw of offshore wind by 2030. In his autumn statement on November 17th Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, mentioned offshore wind repeatedly as a cure for fossil-fuel dependency. Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, pledged more of it in his speech to the Confederation of British Industry on November 22nd. The growth will come through new farms. North of Hornsea a consortium is building a huge wind farm at Dogger Bank. Off Scotland’s coast, Berwick Bank, the largest of a series of enormous wind farms will generate more electricity than Hinkley Point C, Britain’s newest nuclear power station. Some farms will be floating, rather than fixed to the sea floor, a new technology which will allow even more electricity to be generated off Britain’s coastline.

In the short term, the biggest obstacle to Britain meeting its 50gw goal is the success of offshore wind elsewhere: competition for parts and skills is growing. And lean supply chains, a result of the fierce price competition driven by Britain’s contract auction scheme, can also cause delays. “The days when the most important thing was shaving 50p off the cost of production are over. What we need now is speed of deployment,” says Mr Clark.

Britain’s electricity grid must also keep pace, building substations and transformers along the east coast. Existing grid infrastructure was built to cater to coal plants, which tended to be built next to water sources for cooling. While most of the planned future wind farms have already secured their grid connection slots, some have not. This can be a slow process, one the government could speed up by simplifying the planning process and reforming grid designs made for a fossil-fuel world. All offshore wind-generated electricity should eventually come ashore through one of 15 big onshore interconnectors, with their own dedicated offshore grids. Fossil-fuel power, by contrast, tended to be plugged in plant-by-plant. The government could also encourage businesses which do not currently run on electricity, like transport, heat and heavy industry, to make the switch. Longer-term, the offshore wind industry will run into a wall of stagnant demand unless these big chunks of economic activity are electrified.

The rewards will exceed large amounts of clean electricity. Offshore wind employs around 20,000 people in Britain, many of them in maintenance. By 2030, more than 61,000 workers could be employed in the sector, according to the Offshore Wind Industry Council. Many of those jobs will be in places like Grimsby, Hull and Teesside, where the government wants to boost the economy. To get there, the government needs to stay the course and create a stable environment for more companies to set up shop in Britain. ■

Are EPZ enough to attract FDI?

Why has a smart company like Toyota has chosen to build an assembly plant in Myanmar?

Toyota has invested in Myanmar most likely because the infrastructure is robust, future economic growth potential is great and the possibility to export to the left hand drive market of Western China.

Countries like KSA has yet to succeed in enticing companies like Hyundai to develop a plant/ factory as the Tweet proves from Minister of Economy and Planning: "#SaudiArabia in advance talk with #SouthKorea's automobile manufacturing companies, including #Hyundai, to bring the industry to #Jubail."

If Bangladesh wants to develop then developing hundreds of EPZ isn't enough. The country should invest in team building, skill development, investing and honing local talent- many of whom have built electric and sustainable fuel vehicles - and help them to flourish not only locally but also globally with time as they gain experience. We should focus on developing micro factories concept of manufacturing as pioneered by Gordon Murray- through his UK Government funded research - and his partnership with Yamaha has proven it is viable to have decentralized micro factories producing vehicles instead of a large polluting centralized plant.

Autonomous environmentally friendly waterways transport

Social Business name: Unmanned Surface Vessels (USV) Waterways Transport Services.

The problem statement: Currently 90% of global cargo transportation occurs via waterways, which has a large carbon footprint due to vessel’s emissions. International shipping’s carbon footprint is unlikely to change anytime soon as it adheres to traditions which are difficult to change.

Moreover most waterways transportation occurs in a very centralized way. Our solution provides a viable, disruptive, more environmentally friendly and decentralized shipping service for both local and global waterways.

Big idea: Develop, manufacture and operate autonomous solar and/ or wind powered sailing unmanned/uncrewed surface vessels (USV) similar to USA’s Saildrone or UK’s oceandrone.tech made of sustainable materials, incorporating bamboo and jute.

These USVs which can operate 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, 365-days a year autonomous operations in all sea conditions for shipping. The development of these USV using decentralized digital manufacturing, will lead to P2P and B2P shipping on waterways all over the world thereby  opening up new frontiers and making more waterways accessible to global shipping.

Moreover our USVs will help reduce global CO₂ levels as they are solar and/ or wind powered. Their smaller size relative to mega container ships makes them not only operational in more remote areas of the world but they also have a lower environmental footprint.

How I plan to do business: Provide waterways transport services using international standard, environmentally friendly and reliable autonomous shipping both locally and eventually globally. We will sell, lease and rent out our USV depending on the market demand to make money.

We intend to provide waterways shipping services, both FCL and LCL. This competitive priced shipping service will lead to getting market share and profit in the competitive global shipping service. It’s also likely to lead to both P2P and B2C shipping services due to it’s smaller size than traditional shipping which means we can solve a significant part of the problems faced in global shipping while making sufficient profits to sustain the social business that we can utilize to address more global supply chain challenges.

Around 40% of the world population lives within 100km of coastal area according to the UN. As the world population grows, the strain on shipping ports choke points increases. The conventional wisdom is to build ever bigger ships and expand ports, however such activities lead to further challenges like the Ever Given ship getting stuck in the Suez canal and causing global shipping chaos and the third largest port in the world Ningbo-Zhoushan stopping operations due to the covid. As one can understand, there’s a need for an alternative type of shipping which should be p2p and decentralized, so that more people can be served effortlessly.

The idea is to use sailing drones which are autonomous to ship cargo worldwide through ocean and water tributaries, where it can serve the vast majority of the world population. Sail drones have been produced by a handful of companies and individuals in a few countries  world wide but their use has been limited to collecting critical data from the Ocean. These drones are able to sail in harsh ocean conditions including hurricanes and typhoons; which means they will be able to survive carrying parcels and courier them to people.

This social business aims to evaluate the possibility of using fablabs to decentralize manufacturing of sailing drones, to disrupt ocean shipping. Our aim is nothing short of revolutionizing society by using the creativity of the global innovative crowd, through small and medium enterprises and do shipments p2p and b2p, thereby circumventing large shipping oligopolies and create a new gig economy where stakeholders thrive due to a new paradigm in shipping to more people and places through remote waterways.

These drones are powered by sail or solar power and can sail autonomously with almost unlimited range. Some of the problems that will be solved by utilizing them for shipping include elimination of pollution as they neither emit sulfur and carbon dioxide nor cause issues with marine environment since they don’t need ballast water. Moreover due to digital manufacturing and socio-technical change will take place as these drones are used for shipping.

The ever growing fab lab network keeps gaining technological depth and breadth as well as cutting edge equipment which will likely produce durable high quality sail drones that lead to disruption and socio-technical change.

Best part of this video is about a child falling off the cliff and being saved by vine plantation. Currently the farmers aren't able to ship their products to market efficiently enough to develop route network for travelling to school, work and market. How about  bringing the school to them through more online and community based education, working from home whenever possible, develop a bicycle and zipline transport network and P2P distribution of farm produce through sharing economy based app and drones to assure fresh produce reach the consumers in good and healthy conditions.

Nice to see Tunis holding the English better than KSA did with Russia. England did well at the end

Thought of classmate Malvika Khimji who was hospitable to me the moment I entered class P3X at Muscat Private School around 2004. She welcomed me to sit next to her group of friends possibly due to my Indian subcontinent origin but I preferred sitting next to the brightest student to learn and be competitive. So I think I sat next to an Iraqi origin but British passport holder who seemed bright.

Something wrong happened and I got myself into an arranged fight with a Shia Pakistani classmate over an issue I still can't recall. Must be related to pride and he making fun of Bangladesh. I found my self get closer to another Pakistani relatively bright but quite canny yet deceptive student by the name of Jalaluddin Nadeem from possibly Karachi. He had high level of hypocrisy and lacked any loyalty towards many fellow classmates and found himself doing trivial tasks for well off and pretty ladies like tying shoes for Hiba and holding shopping bags full of gifts for Malvika Khimji- who I realised later that she was a good person in heart and soul despite having close friendships with ladies who weren't as good as her which tainted her image in my mind for quite sometime and made me reluctant to engage in any productive discussions with her. She let me borrow money when I needed and I returned the exact amount at soonest possible opportunity, possibly the next day. This experience led me to see a better side of her along with the fact that she always wore clothes which were respectful of the cultures surrounding her.

Food for thought: Did the rich lady wearing jacket which says on the back "I really don't care" really cares about the plight of the children and parents separated by beefed up security and the wars caused by their governments interventions worldwide?

What the high tech capital 'advanced' society shows the world about hunger challenges

Did you know that although Silicon Valley is one of the #richest areas of the #world 1/4 people in Silicon Valley are at risk of #hunger?

Approximately 26.8% of the #population qualify as ‘food insecure’ based on risk factors such as missing meals or relying on food banks. Even with a full-time #job, putting #food on the table hasn’t been simple.

A survey of more than 4,000 students found about half have skipped meals due to the cost.

“You’re not thinking when you pick up your shirts from dry cleaning, or getting your landscaping done, or going to a restaurant, or getting your child cared for, ‘is that person hungry?’ It’s very easy to assume they are fine.”

Peralta earns too much to qualify for food stamps, but not enough not to worry. She pays $2,000 a month – or three-quarters of her paycheck – to rent the small apartment she shares with her youngest daughter. “Even just the two of us, it’s still a struggle.” So once a month, she picks up supplies at the food bank to supplement what she buys at the store.

“You feel like you’re this dead weight, you’re trying to advance yourself but you don’t have the money. It’s a shitty feeling.”

“Here in Silicon Valley, we have a big problem. This is a beautiful place to live for people in the tech industry, but we are not working in that industry.”

Even people who have full-time jobs can find themselves with no way to put food on the table. Outside the gym, Martina Rivera, a 52-year-old mental health nurse, explained that her troubles began when her entire building was evicted last year. (Mass evictions have swept the area as landlords seek higher-paying tenants). Issues in her personal life, which she preferred not to detail, left her separated from her two children and their father. She thought about moving in with family, but worried about the burden. “My brother was recovering from a stroke, and my mother is old,” she says. “I couldn’t put more struggle on them. So what I found was my car.”

  • Martina Rivera, 52, originally from Peru, lived in her car for six months while working as a nurse.
She told herself it was only temporary. “I work night shifts at a veterans hospital, so I would go to my mom’s house to shower, and wait until it was time to work. I waited and waited for the storm to pass.” Eventually she found a room without a private bathroom or kitchen. She shopped for food at 99 cent stores, ate mainly canned food, and cooked in a microwave. It took a toll on her health, she says; she gained weight.
“I was having panic attacks. My body was like the walking dead. But I thought, I need to keep strong. And I never quit my job.”

Karla Peralta, who works at the cafeteria in Facebook, demonstrates in her kitchen at home how she cooks with ingredients she picks up from the food bank.

Rivera says that for many working people, pride is a barrier to admitting need. “People don’t have money to buy food, but they are shy to ask. But there is no reason to feel ashamed.”

Even if I only have a piece of chicken, a little bit of this and that, I am a cook. I make it work.”

The solution is quite simple but hard to implement if we think in conventional wisdom. Think of the great voluntary redistribution opportunity in the development of the ecosystem to assure basic needs for food, shelter, caring, supporting environment etc are all taken care of through a transparent site or app where everyone concerned can see the real situation of people in their surroundings and do what's possible to make their vicinity better.

For instance instead of splurging in large corporate dinners and free food for all in high tech companies cafeterias how about making corporate dinners more personalised and smaller so more quality time are spent together thereby increasing productivity and need based food for employees based on the employees weight and healthy nutritional needs. The savings from such changes and productivity gains can be shared with the community by inviting them to enjoy the fruit and surplus of the neighbors, thus making the community cared for and instilling into locals the urge to repay in kindness.

Solution: We need to check their books and do auditing to assure that crooked money isn't their competitive profiteering advantage

Sami: May Ala give you strength to guide our brothers and sisters to Janna and protect them against hell fire

To summarize Problem: Melanie Fouseau & her assistant Salif of Les Estudines stole my bicycle and many other things like hair cutting professional machine. Estudines denied any wrongdoing and said that they don't do such things and it's not even possible that their personnel stole but they Estudines didn't provide any proof to support their statement. Solution: We need to check their books, video footage etc. make them accountable and do auditing to assure compliance, accountability that crooked money isn't their competitive profiteering advantage and they are not ripping off other students. Situation: Actually they are good people but are greedy. They were really hungry for more money, food and sometimes helpful so I fed them & gave them baguettes, croissant, clothes etc. They need to be guided towards good.

Discussion & Course of Actions with Alex of Turku

Is it possible for you to find out through Veronica or any one else about the situation of Shoei brother's wife Sophie and their kids? Perhaps visit their mother and give her our condolences?
Alex Kuutti
I can try and ask around from people, some who might have some knowledge about her, do u wish me to give this information to u as well
As in if u wish to relate your own condolences to her, or will I do it in your behalf?
And as time has passed already on this issue, should we remind her of it?
Do you know any ways of helping those who're in need
In Syria, like helping children to get food and so on?
Ahmed
Yes
Whatever you think is better
She feels lonely and saddened, think of us two bros replacing the emptiness of the sons that left her nest. Let her share her sorrow with us & we will do our best to help ins ala
I am working on several projects to help people help themselves in need and enrich their self
For helping children in Syria, Iraq, Bangladesh, Indonesia I'm cooperating with EU, Japan, Hong Kong & Bangladeshi partners to develop sailing autonomous cargo boats to deliver food, aid & other essentials to sustain small businesses

Ma sha Allah
You mean mother of Sulaiman and Muhammad
Or whom, I'm quite confused right now
And really, saying to you as it is I have quite enough on my plate as it is
Ahmed
Yes mother of sulaiman and mo
Then no need
do whatever you can
Let me know how they- the wifes and kids- are doing

As soon as I get to know something about them, in sha Allah
Sent one message already to a brother who might have some clue about them, hasn't answered though
And thank you for your understanding
